Take some of the real jazz classics played by Charlie Parker with different line-ups from in 1945 to 1948 and give them to musicians and producers of the recent remix generation and you will get what the record company calls 'Parker's classics dressed in new threads for a new generation'. Called 'Bird up!', an album featuring 13 tracks produced in 2003 emerged out of 'The Charlie Parker Remix Project'.
Artists involved in the project are Dr. John, Dan the Automator, RZA, Serj Tankian, Me'Shell Ndegeocéllo, Kronos Quartet, EL-P, X-Executioners, Ravi Coltrane, Garth Hudson and others. The original recordings by Charlie Parker for example feature Dizzie Gillespie (on piano), Miles Davis, Max Roach or John Lewis.
This definitely is neither easy listening stuff nor the sound the original fans of Charlie Parker would appreciate. It is an approach which might get open minded listeners of the 21st century into the progressive jazz of last century's 40s.
Tracks include 'Now's the time', 'Relaxing at Camarillo', 'Salt Peanuts', 'Bird of Paradise', 'Congo Blues', 'Bebop', 'Steeplechase', 'Cheers', 'A Night in Tunisia', 'All the Shadows of Nuff', 'Perhaps', 'Barbados' and 'Constellation'.
