Viardo Piano Competition in July 2006

Born in the Caucasus Mountains near the Black Sea, renowned pianist and conductor Vladimir Viardo began winning piano competitions while still a child. As his reputation and acclaim spread, Viardo toured America in the early 70s to incredible acclaim. Russia’s Communist government responded by revoking his travel visa. After 14 years of forced detention behind the Iron Curtain, Viardo took advantage of Glasnost to return to the West to perform. He rapidly became one of the most in-demand pianists in the world. After performing with the Dallas Symphony, he became a Professor-Artist in Residence at the University of North Texas. Soon after, he started the Viardo Foundation, which provides financial support to his promising students. Most recently, he has started the Viardo International Competition.
The 2006 competition will take place on July 25 – 29 in Tarrytown, NY. For more information and to download an application, go to www.vviardo.com.
