The PLASA Professional Development Programme is a platform for sharing ideas and showcasing industry expertise. This year, the Professional Development Programme will occupy two spaces at ExCeL London - the Audio and AV Theatre and the Lighting and Stage Theatre. The Professional Development Programme made its debut in 2010. Its aim is to test theory, inspire debate and positively impact the different strands of the entertainment technology industry.
The Audio and AV Theatre will welcome a host of industry experts from organisations like JAMES, the Association of Sound Designers, the Institute of Professional Sound and Soulsound, and from companies including d&b audiotechnik, Funktion-One, Shure and Sound Network.
Joint Audio Media Education Services (JAMES) will be represented by its Executive Director David Ward, who will give two seminars aimed at highlighting the importance of education in the sound industry. ‘The Up-Skilling Forum’ will look at why continuing professional development is vital for the health of the industry and ‘Industry Supporting Education’ will provide an overview of the work JAMES is doing in this field.
The Association of Sound Designers (ASD) will lead a session entitled ‘Pin the Mic on the Actor’ - a practical demonstration of wireless microphone dressing; how to hide them, dress them and colour them. The ASD will examine the different options available to engineers and technicians when mounting a mic and transmitter on an actor.
Two sessions from the Institute of Professional Sound will investigate techniques in sound production. ‘Using PA as a Record Feed’ will compare the differing requirements of a house PA mix with that required for a multi-camera video mix and consider whether one sound mix can satisfy both end requirements. ‘Amplifying Classical Musical Instruments for PA’ will look at the processes and pitfalls of amplifying acoustic instruments for large venues with critical audiences.
Soulsound will coordinate a series of seminars aimed at developing careers in the audio industry. Its curatorial role within the Professional Development Programme follows a similar involvement at PLASA Focus: Leeds.
The audio resource centre will welcome Jon Burton – FOH engineer for The Prodigy and Bombay Bicycle Club – who will explore ‘Sound Engineering for Bands’, offering his own unique insight into the subject. Funktion-One’s founders, Tony Andrews and John Newsham, will lead a Q&A session entitled ‘Point Source. Line Array. What do these terms really mean?’
Microphone manufacturer Shure will present ‘Wireless Mastered’, which will unravel some of the mysteries associated with radio frequencies. And Sound Network will offer advice on keeping heads above water in the live sound industry during its session ‘Building a Sound Reputation’.
Soulsound’s own expert tutors - founder Darryn de la Soul, Justin Grealy and Marcel van Limbeek - will be on hand throughout and to deliver ‘Getting a Foot in the Door - how to make your way in the live sound industry’ and ‘The Nature of Phase’ – a discussion about how phase relationships relate to audio.
