Martinsound's MultiMAX EX multiformat monitor controller was recently central to the remixing of two classic Grateful Dead albums from 1970 for DVD-Audio 5.1 release. The band's former drummer, Mickey Hart, oversaw the remix projects at the Grateful Dead's Club Front studio, near San Francisco.
"Mickey and his engineer, Tom Flye, are remixing the Grateful Dead classics of American Beauty and Workingman's Dead," confirmed staff engineer Jeffrey Norman, who is involved with releases from the band's considerable archives. "They are both going to be on 24/96 DVD-A. They also did separate stereo high-resolution mixes." Added Norman, "MultiMAX proved to be a valuable asset. It was instrumental in monitoring during these two projects."
MultiMAX offers a comprehensive and cost-effective solution to any studio wishing to make the transition to surround sound, or facilities looking to diversify, augmenting the monitor section of an existing stereo mixing system and adding the facilities necessary to handle complex surround sound mixes with only a modest financial outlay.
After initially evaluating MultiMAX it was decided to purchase the surround monitor controller specifically for Hart's remixes. "We do want to have our room set up for surround sound," stated Norman, "and at this point we're not looking at getting a new console--we have a Neve VR Series board. The MultiMAX really fit the bill, sounds very good, and it made sense to use it."
MultiMAX offers level control of multiple speaker systems, with solo, mute and dim control, and incorporates a pink noise generator and individual level trims for easy calibration of the speaker systems. When integrated with a stereo mixing console MultiMAX also adds management of surround encoder and decoder monitoring and downmix compatibility checks.
American Beauty and Workingman's Dead were both released during November 2001. Deadheads can expect more surround sound releases from the legendary tape collection, often referred to simply as The Vault, warehoused at Club Front. "We're going to be doing more surround sound," revealed Norman.
