The Prince Philip Designers Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Design has recognised The Duallist and its designer, drummer Kevin Mackie at an awards ceremony in London. Only seven designers were nominated for the prize and The Duallist is possibly the only drum pedal to ever be on display in Buckingham Palace. Kevin Mackie said of his design, "I just ignored conventional double pedals and designed something that really addressed the playing needs of drummers." Other nominees for the Prize included designers of the London Black Cab, the Wilkinson Sword razor and the McLaren Formula 1 racing car. Pretty good company for a drum pedal. The Duallist was recently on display at The Design Council in London.
The Duallist drum pedal has a single footboard which operates two beaters. On the downstroke the right beater hits the drum. On the upstroke a spring powered left pedal is released against the drum. The Duallist can play in single pedal mode by kicking a heel switch which disengages the left beater. By kicking another heel switch on the other side of the pedal the left beater is brought back into play. This Speedswitch system enables the drummer to kick between single and double modes during play without missing a beat.
