Winter NAMM will be the US tardeshow debut of the Yamaha Tyros Power Keyboard, launched in fall 2002 at the Birmingham exhibition center, UK. According to Yamaha, after 3 years in development, Tyros is set to redefine the boundaries of keyboard technology and will become hugely popular amongst both professional and semi professional musicians.
Whilst the Tyros focus is clearly on sound quality, authentic voicing and the seemingly endless style section, ease of operation remained a key feature in the design philosophy. This has been carried through to the physical design of Tyros, the silver lines of the instrument are home to a host of clear panel buttons which light up with alternate colours to denote their current status. Central to the instrument is a large titling full colour screen which displays all functions in clear detail, the screen is more akin to a computer flat screen monitor.

The 61- key 128 polyphony Tyros boasts over 1150 sounds and houses a wide ranging organ department with graphic representations of traditional drawers on screen for real time control, this sophistication is extended to interactive control over vibrato and rotary speaker functions. Tyros has twice the waveform memory of its predecessors and on hearing, the advantage in sound quality and dynamic range is obvious. As a result of the hugely extended waveform memory Yamaha have developed the Megavoice feature, an advance in music production most immediately obvious in the onboard accompaniments and grooves. Megavoice allows for many layers of different velocity sensitive sounds to be contained within one voice resulting in quality virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.
There are over 300 styles within the instrument covering all types of musical genres: Yamaha have incorporated a Music Finder facility into Tyros containing over 1400 built in songs. The onboard song creator facility is a powerful 16 track sequencer allowing tracks and edits to be made in real or step time or a combination of both. The easy record function provides a speedy and convenient method of recording songs within minutes.
All voices can be edited with the powerful sound creator function, which provides the users with control over all sound parameters, all voices and styles can be further tweaked with the digital signal processing capabilities.
