Prolight+Sound Shanghai - Music China, October 18 -22, 2006

With over 200 exhibitors and 12,000 visitors from 80 countries attending, prolight+sound Shanghai made a successful fourth showing at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. While not the biggest or best known of the pro-audio and lighting events in China, with a 21% increase on 2005 prolight+sound Shanghai is gradually establishing itself as one of the most professional annual platforms for the trade.
Exhibitor feedback was very good all round, with 90% of exhibitors saying they were pleased with their results at the show, and that visitor traffic and quality showed a marked improvement from previous years. "We have seen an encouraging development of prolight+sound Shanghai this year in terms of the size and the quality of the participants," said Derek Au, Managing Director of Procon Event Engineering (China).
The professional mix of visitors to the show was quite diverse, including retailers, dealers, and distributors as well as technicians, engineering contractors and stage & lighting designers - around 1,400 of them coming from overseas.
"This is our first time at Prolight + Sound Shanghai, and we came here to promote our brand to both local and overseas buyers," said Diana Wei of JTS Professional (Taiwan), designers and manufacturers of professional wireless microphones, speakers and amplifiers. "I've met buyers from Spain, Germany and France and have received on-site orders destined for the European market. The quality of the buyers is good, I expect to have repeat business from these contacts."
"We have seen this show grow noticeably over the past three years, and it's getting more professional each year with more dealers and contractors visiting now," said Robert Ascough, Managing Director of Shure Asia. "The organisers obviously have a good 'game plan' for this show, and have put a lot of thought into what the visitors want, and what will attract them; there are lots of fringe activities to supplement the fair. We also hear industry people talking about the show more, which is a clear sign if its growing importance."
The rapid development in the commercial, entertainment and tourism sectors in China means rising demand for pro-audio, pro-lighting and stage technology products - especially in light of the upcoming Olympic Games and World Expo in 2010. "There is enormous potential here in this market," said Q. Cao, General Manager of Loud Technologies (China), producers of mixers, digital recording products, loudspeakers, and commercial audio systems. "We've met a number of engineering contractors here at the fair, they are our exact targets."
In an effort to create a comprehensive industry event, a number of special events were provided, bringing business information and entertainment to all attendees. The Premier Contractor Seminar, held for the first time at Prolight+Sound Shanghai in co-operation with the China Association of Recording Engineers, was a huge success, attracting an audience of over 180 event and engineering contractors. Specialist topics included preparation of bidding proposals, applications of acoustic design software, appraisal and measurement of entertainment venues, design of stage lighting and application of contracts in pro-audio and broadcasting. The Stage Technology Seminar attracted a small but professional audience of performers and designers from the theatre sector.
The fourth "Pioneer Cup DJ Competition" was once again a huge draw for young musical prodigies from all over China.
Cordelia von Gymnich, Vice President of Messe Frankfurt, summed up the organisers views of the show: "We have seen a marked improvement this year, not just in terms of size, but in terms of professionalism and visitor turnout. There are a number of events serving this industry sector in mainland China, but we are very pleased with the steady growth and development of Prolight + Sound Shanghai, and are confident of its continued growth and importance for the pro-audio, lighting and entertainment technology sector."
